What Was WWI England Like? Unlock the Setting of Historical Fiction Series For King and Country
Historical fiction is history in motion. And the For King and Country historical fiction series is no exception. Stories created from an existing event give life to an event. Especially if it seemed distant and emotionless before.
Gale Arlington Jr. and his friends begin their journey in 1914 London, England. There is no doubt that these boys deeply love their country, and are willing to defend her to the death. What was so special about the king and country they were fighting for?
The early 1900s, also known as the Edwardian Era, were comfortable in England. The economy was stable, and unemployment was low. Life was good.
The lower labor class was finally getting a voice. Women were also getting into the room even if they weren’t quite sitting at the table yet. The women’s suffrage movement was rolling full steam ahead. Unrepresented people everywhere were being heard for the first time.
Edwardian England was the England of J.M. Barrie, Beatrix Potter, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Monstrous ships like the RMS Olympic and her sister ship the RMS Titanic were setting sail. Phonographs had become the new must-have for any Englander.
This picture paints a prosperous home for Gale and the boys.
Those who lived in the era could have been suffering from nostalgia when they looked back. England was coming out of the very prosperous Victorian age. But the Edwardian age had yet to produce anything of note.
It was simply the world collecting its breath. A pause before the rug was pulled out from under Europe.
King Edward VII, the king for whom the Edwardian age is named, never saw the horrors of WWI. He was only king from 1901 until 1910 when he passed away. The king himself that Gale and his friends find themselves fighting for was his son, King George V.
King George V took the throne officially in 1911. By all accounts, he was doing an average job before 1914. But as war crashed through Europe like a raging rhino, he gained more respect. The king even went as far as to visit the front in France on many occasions.
The morale boost was enormous when the King of England himself went to the front. The area was incredibly dangerous, but George V risked it anyway to give his soldiers support.
With a home like this, it’s no wonder that soldiers like Gale and his friends volunteered for their country. They believed deeply in their England. The values of the country and its government had tremendous support from the people.
So many soldiers marched into the hell of WWI from all over to save their way of life and the people they loved. Their sacrifice is something that we today will never truly understand.
But we can feel a hint of their devotion or just a touch of their bravery through the stories we tell.
Experience a taste of the incredible sacrifice of the WWI soldier. Find something worth fighting for. Get the For King and Country historical fiction series now!
